The race to the top of the health and fitness mountain is a battlefield.
Countless companies are constantly bombarding you with giant text, humongous bottles with lime green font, trying to sell you the ULTIMATE whey protein, with all of the ULTIMATE benefits.
It can be hard to navigate the sea that is your local nutrition shop sometimes.
Orgain is a company that’s more on the holistic side of things.
Their founder, Dr. Andrew Abraham, found a passion for creating all organic drinks after a battle with cancer left him dependant on nutritional shakes for nutrients and gaining weight.
Their goal is to set a new standard in nutrition, and his company urges people to question the ingredients in the products that they’re putting into their bodies.
One product that you may or may not see making the rounds around the gym is their plant-based organic protein, which according to the label holds up to the claims made by the company and Dr. Abraham.
But does it stay true to its promises of “smooth & delicious” all organic, plant-based goodness? Let’s take a closer look.
Overview
Orgain Organic Protein Powder is USDA organic and is available in two flavors- creamy chocolate fudge and sweet vanilla bean and contains no added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
It is a vegan blend, that’s dedicated to using non-GMO ingredients, and it is also devoid of any soy products.
The protein itself is sourced from brown rice and hemp, as opposed to a synthetic protein formula.
Ingredients:
- Organic Protein Blend (Organic Pea Protein, Organic Brown Rice Protein, Organic Chia Seed, Organic Hemp Protein)
- Organic Creamer Base (Organic Acacia Gum, Organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Organic Inulin, Organic Rice Dextrins, Organic Rice Bran Extract, Organic Rosemary Extract)
- Organic Erythritol
- Organic Cocoa
- Organic Natural Flavors
- Sea Salt
- Organic Acacia Gum
- Organic Guar Gum
- Xanthan Gum
- Organic Stevia
- Monkfruit Extract
In case you were wondering, the word “organic” is used eighteen times.
We like that the company is committed to the promises of all organic ingredients, even though the Xanthan Gum isn’t, we’ll let it slide.
This unique blend of organic ingredients carries with them the following nutritional facts:
- 150 calories
- 4g total fat
- 13g carbs
- 1g sugars
- 5g sugar alcohols
- 21g protein
Orgain’s protein powder, while “healthy” in an organic ingredient sense, is not aimed at the mass gaining gym rats, or the low-carb dieters.
It packs a meager 21g protein, with 13g total carbs.
It contains almost no sugar, with a majority of the carbs coming from natural sources such as their seeds, rice proteins, and oil extracts.
Another point of interest is that the serving size is 2 rounded scoops, with the 2lb. container only holding approximately 20 servings total.
And what’s more rare than a vegan protein powder in and of itself? A vegan protein blend that actually tastes good.
Usually, vegan protein powders are awful tasting, with lumps forming and getting in the way of mixability, creating an unpleasant experience for anyone drinking it.
Is that the case with Orgain’s protein powder?
The consensus seems to be that it doesn’t necessarily taste bad, it just doesn’t taste like much of anything at all.
But the mixability promise of a smooth, creamy consistency is definitely there.
Pros
- All organic
- Naturally sourced
- No additives
- Mixability
- Taste?
Cons
- Price
- Taste?
Conclusion
There is room in the protein shake market for all natural, vegan supps like Orgain, though it’s not a market full of elite athletes or gym rats.
Those seeking out a product like this are health-conscious individuals looking to get a quick boost of nutrition throughout their day.
We’re sure that Dr. Abraham and his people would argue otherwise, but if you’re looking for a magic bicep injection, this isn’t the product for you.
BUT, if you’re vegan and tired of looking around for protein powders, only to drink find disgusting blends that taste like dirt, Orgain can change the game for you.
The taste is almost non-existent, so add it to your favorite smoothie blend, and if the low protein content is a turn-off, then double up your serving size.
If you do that though, you’ll be paying for it.
Their 2lb. tub runs about $24 USD, fairly average for a decent quality protein, but a bit high for the amount of protein you get.
There’s something out there for everyone, and Orgain serves its purpose of getting something out to the organic, vegan niche, and it does so with decent results.
Try it out and let us know what you think!
